Timed Stim Breaks exercise

This timed stim breaks audio will guide you to use stimming for three minutes, then do other behaviors for three minutes. You can use this audio for “stim breaks” that you can schedule throughout your day. Directing stimming behavior to scheduled times can help you to decrease stimming overall. This exercise accompanies the Autism Relaxation Script.

During the next three minutes, do all the stims you want. You do not need to make any effort to stop or control stimming, simply do stimming as needed for three mintues.

(Pause for three minutes)

The three minutes are up. Now let’s do something else for three minutes. First, rub your hands together. Keep going. Keep rubbing your hands together. Feel your hands becoming warm.

Good. Now place your hands on your face. Notice how nice and cool your face feels, and how pleasantly warm your hands are. Rest like this for five seconds...one...two...three... four...five...

Now place your hands on your thighs, palms down. Tap your legs with your thumbs, slowly in time with my counting...one... two...three...four...five...good. Now tap your legs with your index fingers...one...two...three...four... five...okay. Now tap with your middle fingers...one...two... three...four...five...

Your ring fingers...one...two...three...four...five...

And now your little fingers...one...two...three...four...five...good.

Now count with me, out loud or silently in your mind, whatever you prefer. Let’s count up to ten then back down to one. One...two...three...four...five...six...seven...eight...nine... ten...nine...eight...seven...six...five...four...three... two...one.

Find a place to sit or stand where you can tap your feet. When I say “left,” raise your left foot and then touch it to the floor. When I say “right,” raise your fight foot and then touch it to the floor. Get ready...begin.

Good. The three minutes are up. You have completed this stim breaks exercise. Now you can return to your usual activities, and you can use this exercise again whenever you need stim breaks.
