Feels Like I Cannot Breathe: Panic Attack Symptoms
How to handle panic symptoms when it feels like you cannot breathe.
Question:
What is good for when you feel like you can't take a deep breath, have tightness in your chest, and feel lightheaded?
Answer:
Some of the most common signs and symptoms of panic attacks include tightness in the chest, a feeling of being unable to breathe deeply, and lightheadedness. Some tips for panic attacks and ways to reduce anxiety symptoms will follow, but first, here are some of the causes of panic attack symptoms.
The tightness in your chest is most likely caused by muscle tension, rapid breathing, and muscle fatigue. Rapid breathing also causes other signs and symptoms of panic attacks such as lightheadedness (hyperventilation leads to dizziness and lightheadedness).
The feeling of being unable to draw a deep breath is due to the fact that the lungs are already very full of air. Continued attempts to inhale do not work well until the lungs are emptied fully by breathing out.
The quickest and easiest solution to these panic symptoms is to focus on slow breathing, making sure to exhale fully between each breath. The reason is that stopping the hyperventilation will reverse all of these symptoms. The chest will no longer feel tight, breathing in will be easy, and the feeling of lightheadedness will go away.
Relaxation techniques that incorporate calm breathing and muscle relaxation are especially helpful to cure panic attack symptoms such as these.
