2. Relaxation and Coping Q&A: Relaxation and Coping Q&A: How do I stop myself from thinking that if I don't worry and try to relax that I must not be caring enough for my family??

Dear Inner health studio,

How do I stop myself from thinking that if I don't worry and try to relax that I must not be caring enough for my family?

I feel like I must have to worry, that's my job as a Mother isn't it?

Also, what busy Mom has time to relax anyways? It is more important to take care of my family than it is to worry about myself.

Thanks,

From the Martyr

Dear Martyr,

You probably think I'm going to tell you not to worry so much, and list some ways to keep from worrying. But... I'm not. If you believe that your job as a mom is to worry, then perhaps continuing to worry is the best thing to do. You obviously care about your family and worrying is one of the ways you show that caring.

Now, it sounds like the worrying is causing you more distress than you are comfortable with. What I am going to discuss is how to worry in the most productive way possible.

3. New Relaxation Script: 30-Second Relaxation

This quick relaxation script will describe how to relax even though you are busy.

You can use this script to record your own audio for the purpose of teaching yourself how to relax in just 30-seconds.

Begin reading the relaxation script here:

Right now, take 30 seconds to relax your body and reduce stress.

Stand up or otherwise change positions.

Roll your shoulders forward... and now roll your shoulders back.

4. Relaxation and Coping Tip of the Month: Relaxation for busy people

Do you find it difficult to make relaxation a regular part of your day?

Here's how to fit in relaxation when you have a busy schedule:

Start small - do a one-minute relaxation technique, such as calm breathing. Practice short, quick relaxation techniques throughout the day.

To try some guided deep breathing see the written instructions here...

Practical Application: Relax Right Now

Right now, take 30 seconds to relax your body and reduce stress by following these steps (from the 30-Second Relaxation Script):

1. Stand up or otherwise change positions.

2. Move your muscles:
- roll your shoulders forward 4 times, and then back 4 times.
- Clench your hands into fists for 1 second, and then release.
- Stretch your arms out and your hands wide open, reaching up above your head.
- Relax and lower your arms.
- Lower your shoulders. Ease them back slightly.
- Relax your jaw by dropping the lower jaw slightly. Make sure your teeth aren't touching.

3. Breathe: For the remainder of the 30 seconds of relaxation, focus on calm breathing. Most importantly: EXHALE!

Count silently as you breathe:

Inhale... two, three, four...

pause...two, three....

exhale...two, three, four five....

Repeat until your time is up.

4. Change positions one more time, and then get back to your day!
