Overcoming procrastination Dealing with Grief Meditation for Acting Tip of the month: Remember this Simple Stress Relief Tip - LeisureTo maintain wellness and a good quality of life, it is very important that you take time to do things you enjoy. Think for a moment about your hobbies. When people ask what you like to do for fun, what do you tell them? When is the last time you did these activities? If you did them within the last week, great! Keep it up. If it has been a month since you did these things, you need to make time for yourself - soon! If it has been longer than a month since you did the things you enjoy (many people say it has been years since they did their favorite leisure activities) you need to take the time right away to do something just for fun. Why is fun so important? What makes leisure such a critical part of our lives? Leisure is part of a person's identity - the things you enjoy are a big part of who you are. Leisure makes you happier and healthier, and enjoyable activities help relieve stress. Without leisure, life feels out of balance. People without leisure often feel hopeless and lack joy in their lives. The most common reasons people have shared with me when I ask why they have not participated in their favorite hobbies as much as they would like are:
The solutionsNot enough timeTime. So often, it seems like we do not have enough time for fun. Obligations and everyday demands get in the way. The solution to this problem is time management. What can be eliminated to make time for leisure? Are their some duties you could give up or delegate to someone else? Is there a leisure activity that you could replace with something more fun (e.g. watch less TV to do more of your favorite hobby)? Make plans to include leisure in your schedule. Perhaps there are ways to combine work and leisure. Is there a way that you could make money from your hobby? If you like to make artwork, perhaps you could sell your work. If you have an interest or a hobby that you are passionate about, you could build a website to make money doing what you love. If you are skilled in a particular activity, perhaps you could earn money teaching others about this area. There are many ways to make money doing the things you enjoy, and this can help with both time pressures and financial pressures that get in the way of doing what you enjoy. No longer able to do the activities the same way
Sometimes we are no longer able to do things we once enjoyed. Sometimes you need to get creative to find ways to do the things you enjoy, but maybe in different ways. For example... Mrs. E used to love reading, but began having problems with her eyes, discovered that she enjoyed audiobooks and podcasts, and was able to replace reading with these new activities. Mr. N loved to play soccer developed severe arthritis in his knees and could no longer play. He took up soccer coaching and swimming. The coaching allowed him to continue to be involved with soccer, and the swimming enabled him to be active in a way that did not cause pain. When Mr. A lost his job, he no longer had enough extra money to keep up his gym membership. Instead of going to the gym, he decided to walk each day with a friend, and do exercises at home, such as pushups and situps, that did not require equipment. Simple Stress Relief TipDo you want to relieve stress right now? Take 10 minutes, right now, to do something you enjoy. If the things you most want to do require time and planning, use the next 10 minutes to arrange the activities.Do you enjoy camping? Book a camping trip now. Do you like reading? Read a book or go to the library to get one. Do you enjoy a particular sport? Call a friend now and arrange to do the sport together this week. You get the idea. Take the next 10 minutes, while the idea is fresh in your mind, to do something you like or to arrange to do an activity you enjoy. You deserve to have fun!
