Tip of the month: October is National Occupational Therapy Month

October is Occupational Therapy Month. You may wonder - what is occupational therapy?

Occupation is anything that occupies your time, including taking care of yourself and others, doing productive tasks, and enjoying life.

Occupational therapy is a rehabilitation profession that focuses on helping clients successfully do the occupations of living. Working in mental health, I focus on helping clients do the things that they need and want to do in life. This may involve working on specific skills (such as cooking, budgeting, problem-solving, or communicating), targeting symptoms (like low mood, anxiety, or low self-esteem), and developing healthy coping strategies.

Life is diverse. So is occupational therapy. Occupational therapists work in a variety of settings, and job duties can vary widely according to their specific area of focus.

For example, occupational therapy may involve:
- making a splint to help decrease wrist pain
- assessing the setup of a bathroom to ensure the client can bathe safely
- getting a client a wheelchair to get around in
- helping someone learn to feed himself again after a stroke
- exercises to help a client regain hand strength and movement to return to work
- relaxation techniques to help clients manage stress

Notice that each of the examples involve helping clients live life more effectively, whether by adapting the environment, improving safety, teaching skills, or otherwise allowing clients overcome barriers.

How Occupational Therapy Can Help

Are you dissatisfied with any areas of your life? Occupational therapy can help you improve the quality of your life by enhancing skills, removing barriers, and changing the way you do various activities.

For example, relaxation is an occupation. You can become less stressed, more calm, and healthier by enhancing your skills in this area. You can learn relaxation skills to become better and better at relaxation to improve the quality of your life.
