In this newsletter, I'll describe what occupational therapy is and how it can help you. You may wonder - what is occupational therapy? Occupation is anything that occupies your time, including taking care of yourself and others, doing productive tasks, and enjoying life. Occupational therapy is a rehabilitation profession that focuses on helping clients successfully do the occupations of living. Working in mental health, I focus on helping clients do the things that they need and want to do in life. This may involve working on specific skills (such as cooking, budgeting, problem-solving, or communicating), targeting symptoms (like low mood, anxiety, or low self-esteem), and developing healthy coping strategies. Life is diverse. So is occupational therapy. Occupational therapists work in a variety of settings, and job duties can vary widely according to their specific area of focus. Notice that each of the examples involve helping clients live life more effectively, whether by adapting the environment, improving safety, teaching skills, or otherwise allowing clients overcome barriers. How Occupational Therapy Can HelpAre you dissatisfied with any areas of your life? Occupational therapy can help you improve the quality of your life by enhancing skills, removing barriers, and changing the way you do various activities. For example, relaxation is an occupation. You can become less stressed, more calm, and healthier by enhancing your skills in this area.
