Tip of the month: Learn to Relax...the Easy WayYou probably know that relaxation has numerous health benefits, such as lowered blood pressure, better sleep, pain relief, and protection against the harmful effects of stress. In an attempt to achieve these benefits, many people try to force themselves to relax. If you have ever attempted to MAKE yourself relax, you know all to well that this just does not work. Learning to relax does not have to be difficult. You can learn to relax the easy way with these simple tips: 1. Start with short sessions (5 minutes or less). 2. Use guided techniques first (follow a or listen to relaxation audio that describes each step), then relax on your own once you are familiar with how to relax. 3. Begin with the techniques that come most naturally to you. Meditation is too challenging for most beginners to start off with, but most people experience success early on with progressive muscle relaxation or autogenics. If these techniques are not for you, there are many other options available! 4. Let go of expectations. Don't try to force yourself to make anything happen. Just passively relax and observe what happens. 5. Practice often, every day if possible, for one month. You are learning a new skill and cannot expect yourself to be proficient right away. Keep a journal to record your experiences with relaxation and compare how you feel before and after each exercise. This will allow you to monitor the effectiveness of each technique and see your progress. For more help with learning to relax, check out my Learn to Relax class or easy relaxation techniques videos.
