Tip of the month: Why Everyone Needs an Emotional First Aid Kit

You probably have a first aid kit in your home. It contains items that may be needed in the event that someone sustains a burn, cut, or other injury. The first aid kit is used to treat minor injuries, or to treat major ones before obtaining professional help.

An emotional first aid kit is the same kind of idea. The emotional first aid kit is used to treat the emotional self. Emotional difficulty could be stress, loss, anger, sadness, loneliness, or any other sort of emotional problem.

Everyone experiences negative emotions at times, and having a kit ready and waiting to help out can allow you to feel good again.

All you need to get started is a box (a shoebox will do) and to gather some items that can act as first aid for your mental health.

Items to Include in an Emotional First Aid Kit:
- Written plans for improving mood (e.g. When I feel down, I can try going for a walk, phoning my friend, etc)
- Books, magazines, videos, pictures, songs, or objects that make you laugh
- DVDs of favorite movies or TV shows
- Music that makes you feel energized
- Music that makes you happy
- Music that helps you feel calm
- Relaxation audio CDs
- Letters or cards you have received from others that make you feel special
- Encouraging letters written to yourself
- A list of your strengths
- A list of people to call when you need support
- A list of activities that improve your mood
- Contact information for community agencies or supports (library, mental health, support groups, doctor, therapist, etc)
- Tea, bubble bath, aromatherapy, or other items to help you relax
- Art supplies
- A journal to write in
- $20 cash to take yourself out (to a restaurant, a movie, yoga class, the swimming pool, etc)

Having a kit like this available ensures that you have access to things that will help you feel better, without the need to plan or try to think of something to do when you're upset or stressed.
